Why do we use cookies?

Cookies are very useful and perform various functions that make browsing a website easy and pleasant. You could say they’re like the site’s “memories” of you, helping it remember how you’ve navigated its pages and the choices you’ve made along the way.

You can navigate more easily and quickly on a site that remembers you than on one that doesn’t. That’s why most of the sites you know and love use cookies.

Last but not least, when we integrate social media plugins into the site, they place social media cookies to enable the playback of content (e.g. Youtube, Soundcloud), to give you the possibility to log in using a third party service (e.g. Facebook or Google, Instagram) as well as to allow you to like or share a page on your preferred social media platform.

What’s in a cookie?

A cookie is a simple piece of information in the form of a very small text file. Each individual cookie is unique and consists of the name of the site that created it and a unique string of numbers and letters.

Most websites place cookies on the hard drive of your device (computer, mobile phone or tablet) when you browse them. They do this through your browser – for example Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox. A cookie can only be read and retrieved by the site that created it. Sites can never exchange information with each other through cookies.

Some cookies are only valid for the duration of your visit. These “session cookies” disappear from your computer or mobile device after you close your browser. Other cookies remain on your computer or mobile device after you close your browser and are still valid for a specified period of time. These “persistent cookies” are activated each time you visit the site that generated them.

What’s not in a cookie?

Cookies (as independent elements) do NOT contain:

  • Personal information – you cannot be personally identified based on a cookie alone.
  • Program code – unlike a computer virus, a cookie is not made up of code, meaning it is not capable of damaging your device.

For what purposes do we use cookies?

A visit to this site may place the following types of cookies:

  • cookies strictly necessary for the operation of the site
  • cookies for analyzing the behavior of website visitors
  • cookies for personalized advertising

Necessary cookies

First, they may be necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the website. For example, without cookies it may be difficult for the website to remember that you are logged in or which products you have added to your shopping cart. These are called necessary cookies  , and they are active automatically, not subject to the visitor’s consent.

We have also included here the cookies placed to show you non-personalized advertising (which remember the fact that an advertisement has been displayed), as well as those that measure our audience on the site (but without including the demographic or audience segmentation component), as without traffic measurement our site cannot be profitable, and privacy rules are not intended to block the display of advertising.

Analysis cookies

Analytics cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, such as which pages are most popular, which method of connecting pages is most effective, and whether users receive error messages from websites . These cookies allow us to provide users with a high-quality user experience and help improve the way our website works, as well as demographic segmentation of the audience, which is further used to personalize advertising if this purpose is permitted.

Last but not least, when we integrate social media plug-ins into the site, they place social media cookies to enable playback of content (e.g. Youtube, Soundcloud), to enable you to log in using a service third party (e.g. Facebook or Google) as well as to enable you to like or share a page or product on your preferred social service.

Cookies for personalized advertising

We also use cookies to allow personalization of online advertising. The use of advertising personalization cookies is a current standard of most major websites you visit. Advertising of this type helps us to reach the categories of customers interested in a certain type of product, to whom the respective advertisements are displayed. As a rule, the information about the categories that define the range of interested users is not personal data, but the profile that is created about the visitors is based on the data collected through advertising profiling cookies, it falls under the category of personal data. As these cookies are placed by services controlled by us, it follows that profiling (which is a processing of personal data) through these cookies is carried out by us as a data controller. You can opt out of being profiled by Google for advertising purposes by visiting  https://www.google.com/settings/ads

smartpedo.com  will by default only use cookies that are strictly necessary for the operation of the site, the other categories of cookies can only be used with your consent.

Cookies can be blocked from the Browser

Most browsers are set to accept cookies. But if you do not want this, you can set your browser either to notify you whenever you receive a cookie or to refuse to accept cookies at all.

However, you should be aware that some sections of our website will not be able to be viewed normally if you have set your browser to reject all cookies. Not because we don’t want this, but because some functions of our website cannot work properly without the use of cookies.

Information and instructions on how to edit this feature can be obtained depending on your browser provider:
