Would you tell us a few words about yourself?

My name is Anda Budulan. I graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara in 2010. Then I have been given my Certificate of Complementary Studies in Pedodontics at UMF Carol Davila. I also got a Competence Certificate of Inhalation Analgesia: Inhaler Mixture With Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen in Dentistry within the same University.

Why did you choose to become a dentist who works exclusively with children?

I’ve always liked children, that’s why it’s easy for me to work with them. I like speaking to them a lot and explaining the procedures to them in various ways. With them everything becomes extremely pleasant.

What satisfactions does pediatric dentistry bring to you?

I have been practicing pedodontics for 9 years, and the satisfactions brought by the little patients are immeasurable. A “thank you” from my little patients makes me forget about all the fatigue accumulated during the entire day. Not to say how wonderful it is when they interrupt me during a treatment just to tell me how much they love me.

What does a day at work look like for you? What are the most common problems that patients encounter?

Together with the multidisciplinary team, we assess the little patients, establish a diagnosis and a treatment plan, taking into account all the individual elements of the patient.

What do you think are the strengths of a good pediatric dentistry specialist?

A good dentist must, first of all, be able to show empathy towards patients and be able to communicate easily with them. Of course, there must be the ability to work thoroughly, and because one works in the oral cavity, it is very important for the doctor to be ambitious and always want to improve, to offer innovative ways to his patients. In this job, professional development never ends, it is a lifetime responsibility.

What is it like to be a pediatric dentist starting out? On that note, do you have any advice for an early career dentist?

Any dentist at the beginning of his career must be aware that, if he wants to become a competent doctor and appreciated by his patients, he must regularly attend professional training courses, in order to always be up to date with the new treatment methods in this profession, which fill out even monthly.

On what values ​​do you think the doctor-patient relationship should be built and what do you think is the most important aspect of this relationship?

I strongly affirm that trust is the greatest value in the doctor-patient relationship, but it is usually built over time by both parties. Also, doctor-patient communication is paramount for an effective and long-lasting relationship.

What were the challenges in this job and how did attending to courses and conferences help you in this regard?

Dealing with children can be challenging because of their spontaneous, energetic and curious nature. Doctors must not only possess knowledge of medicine and emotional intelligence, but also a lot of patience. The national and international conferences helped me in my development as a pedodontist making me able to treat my little ones at international standards.

How do you manage to win the goodwill of the children to cooperate in the medical consultation?

It is an intrinsic art. You either have it or you don’t… just like having an aesthetic sense, the ability to see in space or similar. Children are an excellent detector of insincere people or people who dislike contact with him – so a child who does not create positive emotions for you and with whom you cannot “play”, you will not be able to consult him as you should, in detail.
